Packing: TSA 3-1-1 Rule

Friday, February 6, 2015

As I mentioned in my previous post, for this trip to San Francisco, I'm not going to be checking any luggage. This means that all of my non-powder beauty products will have to fit into one small, plastic bag. I've never travelled without checking at least one piece of luggage before, so I had to research what exactly the rules are regarding liquids and carry-ons. Below is an explanation of how the rules work, but first, I've listed out all of the products that I'll be bringing along:

Whilst researching exactly how much liquid I could bring on a plane, I discovered the TSA 3-1-1 Rule. For flights flying from (or within) the U.S., "any liquids, gels, aerosols, creams, and pastes must be 3.4 ounces or less per container (100 ml); must be in 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; and you can have 1 bag per passenger". Beauty products that fall into this category include (but are not limited to) liquid foundation, concealer, liquid eyeliner, cream eyeshadow, gel deodorant, any aerosol hair products (like hairspray), sunscreen, and moisturizers.

These rules make it VERY difficult to properly pack all your beauty needs into one carry-on bag, however, there are a few exceptions to the rule, one including medications: "It is not necessary to place medically required liquids in a zip-top bag. However, travelers must tell the TSA officer at the beginning of the screening process that they wish to bring medically necessary liquids in excess of 3.4 ounces in their carry-on bag".

One of my packing lifesavers was small, refillable travel bottles. I got mine from Target, and they were super inexpensive. Next to a few of my carry-on items that I've listed above, I've put a * to indicate that I put some of the full sized product into one of the travel bottles from Target. Regarding most of the other links, they lead to the travel sized version of the product!

Despite the TSA's every effort to make your life a living hell, I've managed to fit all that I need into one quart sized bag that I purchased here. Make sure to check out the TSA Website for more information on travelling restrictions, and how to best pack for your trip!

Happy Travels!
