Cancún Part Six! (Chichen Itza)

One of the most historically interesting parts of my trip to Mexico was our visit to Chichen-Itza. This archeological site was part of a pre-Columbian city built by the Mayans. On the ground there are a series of awe-inspiring pyramids and 'The Great Ball Court" (amongst other ancient structures). "The Great Ball Court" is what the ball court in the movie The Road to El Dorado was modeled after (click here to see what I'm talking about).

Handmade Dresses by women in Aguascalientes.
Amongst the pyramids and other features there were markets full of local products. These dresses were hand-sewn by some of the women in Aguascalientes.

This quote comes straight from the Wikipedia page about the main pyramid El Casticllo, and just goes to show how amazing this structure is...

"The pyramid consists of a series of square terraces with stairways up each of the four sides to the temple on top. Sculptures of plumed serpents run down the sides of the northern balustrade. During the spring and autumn equinoxes, the late afternoon sun strikes off the northwest corner of the pyramid and casts a series of triangular shadows against the northwest balustrade, creating the illusion of a feathered serpent "crawling" down the pyramid. Each of the pyramid's four sides has 91 steps which, when added together and including the temple platform on top as the final "step", produces a total of 365 steps (which is equal to the number of days of the Haab' year)."
How incredible is that?

Anyway, we had a ton of fun on this day trip to the pyramids. I'm so glad that we got the opportunity to go!

Until next time!
